6 easy SEO strategies

More and more people are responsible for information dissemination on the Web, often without any formal — or even informal — training in search engine optimization. Here is a presentation I gave at the Online Information Conference in London On December 2:

The presentation outlines six tounge-in-cheek typologies representing tried and true ways of making content visible online. These techniques do not include tweaking of meta tags. In fact they don’t require HTML skills at all. They focus, not on building web pages that search engines like, but on writing content that real web searchers are looking for.

3 Tips to Get Around the Link Bait RoadBlock

Have you ever had one of those days where you’ve hit a creative roadblock and can’t write a thing? Do you find yourself saying “what the heck am I going to blog about today” or wondering where you can go for new link bait ideas?

I have. When I find myself hitting a creative roadblock, I head to a couple of my favorite on and offline places for content inspiration and link bait ideas.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Magazine Rack

You hear a lot of people say brilliant ideas come to them while they shower; for me they come as I stand in front of the magazine rack at Barnes and Noble. (more…)

Linking Means Moving Backwards Too : Link History

Link development doesn’t just move forward…many times, a bit of digging into the past is in order unless you want to continue to paint over mold on the wall. You have to (ahem) become a link history detective. You may even get your own show.

I haven’t got time to worry about the future when I’m busy covering up my past.” Marc Almond

It’s really lovely when you begin link development for a site that has previously done little or no work in this area. Starting from scratch ensures that you don’t have to worry about someone else’s past mistakes coming up to bite you. However, this isn’t always what you get…and sometimes the past mistakes may, actually, be yours, even if you’re the only link builder to have touched the site. (more…)

3 Google AdWords Reports That Will Get You a Raise

Let’s face it executives love reports. If you work in-house, your VP or Director of Sales/Marketing just wants to see that everything is going well. If you are an agency, it’s all about those pesky reports. We are the magicians that turn tons of raw data into a multi-color rainbow of happiness.

My guess is that you use the standard reports from AdWords; keyword, ad group, and account performance reports. But here are a few more you might be missing and how they can make you look like the Rock Star you really are in the eyes of those executives.

Google AdWords Reports

Placement Performance

This is my favorite report when I have an account running ads on the content network, especially when they are a B2B or otherwise non-teenager focused company. This report allows you to pull information on what partners on the content network are performing. It’s best to use when you have conversion tracking activated on AdWords. (more…)

6 Steps To Bake SEO Into The Web Design Process

Despite tough economic times, and advertising budgets being pulled back in almost every sector I know of, companies are still recognizing the need to be different to stand out from the competition in such bleak times. Many of the prospects I’ve spoken to in the recent past have told me that they intend to get a fresh look by revamping their website, but of course, SEO wasn’t baked into that process. In fact, I’ve one lead even told me to ‘call him back in 6 months, once the design was done so we could revisit SEO for his site.

Assuming you’ve passed the first challenge of letting your client know that you or your agency are fully capable of working with their web designer/agency, the path to creating an SEO friendly website lies in the ability to bake SEO into the design process.

Here are 6 steps to make that process as easy, enjoyable, and productive as possible when working with the designer who will ultimately create structural and navigational elements of the client’s website. (more…)

Elephant Links

Remember reading this in your Marketing 101 class?

If the circus is coming to town and you paint a sign saying ‘Circus Coming to the Fairground Saturday’, that’s advertising.

If you put the sign on the back of an elephant and walk him into town, that’s promotion.

If the elephant walks through the mayor’s flowerbed, that’s publicity.

If you can get the mayor to laugh about it, that’s public relations.

And if you planned the elephant walk, that’s marketing.

Let’s change it up a bit for Link Marketing 101:

Google PageRank Update on New Year’s Eve

Google has updated their Google Toolbar Pagerank as of about 1 hour ago, marking a New Year’s Eve PageRank update which should have a whole lot of web publishers and bloggers discussing their changes in PageRank over the New Year holiday.

Search Engine Journal’s Google PageRank stayed the same at PR 6, but we noticed immediately that IMBroadcast.com/s Google Toolbar PageRank is now a PageRank 4 (up from a PR 0 since it’s a relatively new site).

Sure, the PageRank which is shown on the Google Toolbar is not an accurate indicator of how Google ranks or values a site, and is only on of many factors which goes into a live and real Google PageRank, but it’s still some sort of indicator, and will always be so while it’s still around.

Webmasters are weighing in already on the change via Twitter :

  • @gyutae crap… google just updated PageRank… WinningtheWeb.com went down from a 4 to 3.. and lost site links
  • @JustinLoans: Google Pagerank updated today!! Anybody went up? 3 out of 4 of my sites went up woohoo
  • @dragonblogger: Just found out my Poetry Blog received a Google PageRank of 2 today. Ironic since it has 1/10th as much traffic as my other 2 blogs

More Twitter conversation on the Google PageRank Update New Years 2009.

Did you notice the little green bar change for your site?
