The number of blogs or weblogs on the Web continues to grow at a breathtaking pace.
The Technorati blog search engine is now tracking over 70 million weblogs. The company sees 120,000 new weblogs being created worldwide each day. As Technorati’s David Sifry’ says: “That’s about 1.4 blogs created every second of every day.”
However, the number of splogs (i.e spam blogs generated to get people to click on affiliate links or pay per click ads) is also rising. Technorati is now counting between 3,000 – 7,000 new splogs every day. We probably have a lot of automatic spam software to thank for that.
Sifry also notes that blogs are becoming more popular compared to “regular” sites: The number of blogs in the top 100 most popular sites has risen substantially. In the third quarter of 2006 there were only 12 blogs in the Top 100 most popular sites, in the fourth 22.
And the most popular blog language according to Technorati is not English- Nope, it is Japanese with 37 percent, followed by English with 36 and Chinese with 8.
Technorati has also noted a significant increase in the use of tags. As Sifry points out: “People are clicking on tags, people are using tags, Google features tagged media in its results pages. Tags adoption has become a phenomenon across the Live Web, and we are seeing a correlative explosive growth at Technorati.”
